Acne Treatments

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the sebaceous glands characterised by inflammation, blackheads, whiteheads, macules, papules, pustules and cysts and often leads to scarring. The first chain of events that usually lead to acne, especially acne on the face, are in puberty when the body starts to produce testosterone, which then stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce excess sebum that is then trapped in the hair follicle. Dead cells are attached to this sticky substance and bacteria then forms, therefore the cells cannot exfoliate and a hard mass is then produced within in the skin.

Over 40% of females will have acne during some part for their life and over 35% of males will be affected.

Contributing and aggravating factors:

1. Increased oil production.
2. Abnormality in the bacteria (Propionibacterium) of the skin, which can produce inflammation.
3. Abnormality in cell turnover, resulting in blockages deep down in hair shafts and oil glands.
4. Hormonal imbalances.
5. Stress-Physical, emotional or job-related.

Acne is graded from 1 to 4 depending on the severity or be diagnosed either INFLAMED or NON-INFLAMED. Basically, in acne skin, the problem is that the skin is not functioning properly. Michaela basis her acne treatments around DMK enzyme therapy. She uses a combined approach bringing in other treatment modalities. You will have an individual treatment programme worked out for your specific skin acne concerns. Each treatment prescribed will change from session to session as the skin is changing. Alkaline Wash is sometimes combined with Enzyme therapy (suitable for inflamed cystic acne) to swell, soften and dissolve excess cell build-up, releasing the inflammation and impaction killing the P Acne bacteria. Alkaline wash plus enzyme masque #1 will dislodge the underlying manifestation and rebuild the structure and function of the skin simultaneously.

Variations of acids, alkaline, phenols and enzymes are incorporated within your treatment programme. Nano current, LED and IPL are also added in at various stages of treatment. (Skin needling along with mesotherapy or skin boosters may be used once acne is in remission to perfect results).

All treatments will include a home prescription, which must be strictly adhered to, to obtain the best results possible.

Treatments can range from a course of six upwards, depending on the severity of the condition.

Scarring Treatments

Scars can be treated; however, it can take time (it is a bit like chipping away at a diamond). After a thorough skin diagnosis, a treatment programme will be established according to the type of scar tissue, and the client’s genetic colouring. Scar revision will always require a combination of treatment.

The correct protocols will be advised along with the correct home prescription. Each treatment will be progressive, and each treatment will be different. Treatment may involve medical microdermabrasion, acids, alkaline, enzymes therapy, LED and IPL. Skin needling, pigmentation treatment along with skin boosters may also be incorporated.

Treatment for Pigmentation

Abnormal pigmentation (hyper-pigmentation), especially on the face can be disfiguring and can affect a person’s confidence at work or in social situations. It can occur on any skin-type but those with darker skin-types are particularly prone to it. There are two types of pigmentation, ‘passive’ and ‘inflammatory’. Passive pigmentation is caused by hormones (e.g. during pregnancy) or medication induced. Inflammatory can be caused by many things to include sun exposure, stress, and anxiety. Trauma such as a wound caused by acne, friction, picking, product misuse or harsh treatments can cause inflammation which results in PIH know as Post-Inflamed Hyperpigmentation. Pigmentation can be permanent unless treated and controlled.

For minor and localised hyper-pigmentation, there are some home use crèmes/serums that can be prescribed that can give very good results. Clinic treatments may include the use of peels, enzymes, skin needling, mesotherapy and IPL. When using peels in the clinic the skin may be prepared at home beforehand with Vitamin A cream (retinal) to give even penetration. Tyrosinase (pigmentation) inhibitors are always incorporated. You will also be required to use post care Tyrosinase inhibiting products to continue to calm down melanocytes and bring them back to normal. This will also help prevent post pigmentation rebound. SPF applied correctly is an absolute must and SPF mishaps can often lead to more pigmentation damage. Diligence is the key and a maintenance plan carried out long term will keep your pigmentation under control.

Folliculitus (Ingrown Hair Treatments)

Ingrown hair, in both men and women, can be very successfully treated with DMK Alkaline Wash, which swells the hair follicle and releases the ingrown hair. Redness and inflammation are addressed, leaving the skin smoother and supple. Several treatments may be necessary, but the results are worth it.

Each treatment takes about one hour. Home prescription is to be used daily in between treatments for best results. A consultation and patch test are required prior to treatment.

Folliculitis can occur anywhere on the body including the arms, legs, and bikini area. In most cases, all these areas can be treated successfully.
